Here at The Glades we love to make shopping as easy as possible. That’s why we provide a FREE Personal Stylist service for our customers to help with those big occasions or everyday outfits that can sometimes be such a struggle. We know it can feel like a big step making that first appointment, especially when you’re not feeling your most confident, so we sat down with Juliet, our stylist-in-residence, to ask some questions about the service and show you how easy and fun shopping with her can be.

 Personal Stylist
How did you become a stylist?
I’ve always loved shopping and being creative with my outfits and my friends would come to me for advice on what to wear all the time. They were always telling me I was in the wrong job! I saw an advert in the paper for a stylist position at The Glades and instantly knew it was made for me. I came for an interview and was asked to create 3 outfits in half an hour; Avril Lavigne, a 60-year-old woman and, scariest of all, one for the interviewer! It was a challenge but I did it and I’ve worked here ever since – that was 7 years ago.

What did you do before you were a stylist?
I was a book keeper! Every day I would go to work in a different outfit, just mixing up my clothes – everyone I worked with said I should be in fashion instead.
  …
7 years is a long time; how do you stay inspired in your job?
I just love meeting new people and dressing them. The main thing is I don’t treat people like mannequins, they’re human and I never get tired of people coming away from a session with me looking and feeling great. That transformation I can create in people never fails to inspire me.
  …
What can people expect to happen when they meet you for their first appointment?
Firstly, we’ll have a sit down in my lounge which is within the shopping centre just opposite the Disney Store. I ask all my clients to fill out a form which we use as the basis of a “getting to know you” conversation. I ask questions about the person’s lifestyle, what they do for work and whose style they admire which helps me narrow down where to take them shopping. Next, we’ll do a colour consultation so I can show them which colours are the most flattering on them. After that we hit the shops. I’m totally independent so there’s no pressure to buy anything from a particular store or to spend a certain amount of money. While we’re shopping we talk about what shapes are best for the client’s body type and hopefully they come away with increased confidence and clothes they’ll love forever.
  …
When you first meet someone do you know instantly where you want to take them and how you want to dress them?
Absolutely! In the first 5 minutes I know which shops I want to take them in; I’m already building outfits in my head while they’re getting settled on the sofa. But ultimately it’s a collaboration between me and the client to get to the perfect outfit.
  …
Do you ever push people to go into shops they would never normally go near?
Absolutely, my clients trust me to know what I’m doing. I’ve dressed 80-year-old ladies in Levis and French Connection before, you never know until you try something. I like to bring people out of their comfort zone but not scare them. I recently had a client who never wears colour or pattern, only black, white and grey. We went in a shop and she automatically went for a cream top whereas I went straight for orange because I knew it would look sensational on her. I held back until she was ready for it then brought it out halfway through the session. We ended up paring it with bright blue trousers and she looked fantastic.

What the best thing about your job?
When people say to me, “you’ve changed my life, I feel like a different person”. Making people feel great and knowing that I’ve done that for them just feels amazing. I get some beautiful thank-you letters which often leave the team here in tears. Obviously I also love the fact I can be in the shops all day, working with fashion! I have great relationships with the teams in the stores here as well which really helps make my job easier.
  …
Have you had any real stand-out moments in your career as a stylist?
The client who I will always remember was a lady who I styled in the last months of her life. She was suffering from cancer and came in with her husband. People think sometimes that clothes are just frivolous but they can have such a huge impact on your emotional well-being. That lady knew she was dying but it was still important to her to look beautiful and put her best self out there for the world to see. It helped both her and her husband and it was amazing for me to be able to help someone at the very worst time in their life.
  …
What are your top Spring/Summer 2017 trends?
I’m loving the utility chic look at the moment. I love a jumpsuit and those khaki colours look great on lots of different people. I also love the trend for ruffles and volume at the moment, especially on sleeves. Sleeves are huge this season, literally!
  …
Spring is coming, what are your favourite transitional pieces?
I can’t wait to wear my spring clothes so I’m throwing a fur coat over all my outfits to make sure I don’t freeze. While the weather’s all over the place flat shoes are a must, life’s too short to wear heels! I’m really into feel-good fashion for Spring. I’m keeping the sparkly jackets and metallics from Winter but mixing them with something classic and simple like jeans and a jumper.
  …
Finally, we’ve talked a lot about women’s fashion, do you style men too?
Of course! I love dressing men, lots of my clients send their husbands or family members to see me. I love Massimo Dutti and Zara for menswear, they do great classics with a twist.
